We’re trying to find out who said, “to be early is to be on time.” Probably Ben Franklin? Google is vague at best on this one. In any case, the adage applies to App47 and the importance of MAM in the complete context of enterprise mobility management.

App47 was founded — and we’re going back a few years now — on the highly informed hunch that you really can’t have EMM without MAM. We’ve been biding our time, building our client roster, and it looks like that hunch is paying off. We’re seeing welcome understanding of MAM that verifies our earliest convictions (a move past the constricted perspective we often dealt with mere months ago). MAM has become a critical part of the enterprise mobility landscape, pulling even (and maybe even getting a slight lead?) on MDM, Mobile Security, and MBAS.

So okay, people understand that MAM is something they need. What we’d like to get a handle on is the popular perception of what MAM actually is. We’ll be the first to tell you that it’s a lot more than just an app store, more than distribution and updates — and that it constitutes critical management capability for the entire mobile enterprise application lifecycle. The good news is that more and more people get that. The challenge is that with increased understanding comes a measure of misconception that needs to be corrected.

To that end, we’re going to put a few questions in circulation in the weeks ahead, asking people to share their perspective on MAM, and even elaborate on how it’s functioning within their organization’s use of enterprise mobility. From that, we can speak to how MAM is perceived vs. what MAM actually achieves. The difference, we think, will be worth noting. Expect more soon!
