These days, you’d think it would be obvious to most companies that they need enterprise mobility management. And yet, time and time again we’re shown that that’s not the case.
While there are of course numerous reasons that a company may choose not to implement EMM, some of the most common reasons we hear are (perceived) complexity and cost. Those can certainly be factors, but they aren’t as significant as you might think. What’s more, despite the rigorous IT structures many organizations have in place for managing other digital tools, it’s wrong to assume that you can take a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to mobility management.
In a recent piece for Enterprise Mobility Exchange, writer Steven Lerner talks about just this phenomenon, and specifically, why every enterprise needs EMM. Without an enterprise mobility management solution, Lerner says, organizations may face a number of issues when trying to manage mobility, not least of which is security. With more apps than ever in the enterprise, organizations need to be hyper aware of what devices and apps are being used, and where that data is going. Cost and complexity are concerns, as well. From the cost of developing mobile apps (in-house or otherwise) to the cost of education and onboarding, there can be significant expense involved with a decentralized management solution. Likewise, the vast number of devices, operating systems, and apps in use can make trying to manage mobility without a central hub extremely difficult.
If you’re thinking at this point that all roads lead to EMM, you’d be right. Enterprise mobility management solutions, Lerner says, can help an organization do everything from configure devices to distribute apps to enforce security protocols. And we agree. It’s not that these things can’t be managed without EMM, it’s that EMM makes the management process so much easier.
