Last Monday, I attended my first DC Tech Meetup where I represented App47 on the “State of Mobile Innovation” panel. I was joined by Thao Tran, grandepharmacie24 head of Washington Post Labs, Todd Moore, CEO of TMSoft and author of ” Tap, Move, Shake,” and Sanders Partee, co-founder and CEO of RideCharge/Taxi Magic. Pete Erickson, founder of Disruptathon and MoDevDC, moderated the discussion.

The panelists represent different arms of the mobile experience – from consumer Apps to media, to enterprise. But across the board, one topic in particular spurred a good deal of commentary, analytics. Not surprisingly, analytics (a topic I’ve addressed before on our blog) is still one of today’s biggest challenges for mobile.

Too often analytics is an afterthought or a “check the box” step on the way to compiling performance, download and usage reports. But deeper analytics can go far beyond reports, by providing unparalleled insight at the data and functional level. With analytics you can see how an App is used, what elements inside the App get the most traction, and when the App is accessed. Once this information is understood at the data and functional level, then you can leverage it to not only make strategic decisions about how to improve the user experience, but to also define your mobility project’s ROI. In my opinion, ROI is the key to turning an App into a successful, profitable endeavor.

It comes down to this: if you can’t measure it, then you can’t monetize it.
